  • Mmmm, I can't say I'm too keen about the invasive nature of the scanners, but for me, the real dealbreaker is the radiation exposure. Sure, it's "low" dose, but it's not an all or nothing proposition when talking about the harmful effects of radiation; it's cumulative.

  • Not only did she decide to go off-road in Death Valley, but she decided to go off-road in Death Valley with her 11 year old son after she already had to change a flat tire. (No more spares.) Oh yeah, in the summertime, when temperatures can reach 120 degrees.

  • You forget that people DO kill their children, whether out of malice or mental illness. While the strange factors of this case (I cited those above) are not cause to declare that she killed her kid, they are sufficient to demand an investigation...and that's all that people are saying here.

  • Strange: 1. The fact that she wanted to camp (not just drive and come back) in the harshest North American desert during its peak temperatures. Regardless of anecdotal cases you cite about friends who do it...it's statistically very unusual.

  • Capt Tripps: I worked for a vet clinic for 3 years. I've seen dogs die from heat stroke after only 30 minutes - 1 hour in a car. Even if they had lived, it would have been with noticeable neurological trauma.

  • How about this...Red Rock is more popular than Death Valley, and if you go there during the summer, you may see a few cars in the parking area first thing in the morning, but they tend to clear out by noon. Why? Because of the heat.

  • Well, the problem is that the mother's choices were so poor as to be suspect. She's a nurse, so she has average to above-average intelligence and she understands the dangers of heat exposure.

  • Yeah, I smell a rat with this. Dogs are more susceptible to heat than kids, but yet the pooch lived and the kid didn't? I live in Vegas, too, and yeah, NOBODY goes to Death Valley in the summer. People head to Lake Mead, Mt. Charleston, or Zion (Utah).

  • I agree that he comes across as a pretty wretched guy, but the law is not supposed to be based on the likability and/or the pitifulness of the parties. Neither should the severity of her injuries should have any bearing on the determination of liability.
